Day 1; Arrive in Addis Ababa
Arrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport and transfer to hotel. Take a city tour. Addis Ababa means “new flower” and is Ethiopia’s largest and capital city. Sitting at an elevation ranging from 7,000 to 8,300 feet. It is a unique mixture of new, tall buildings mingled and traditional houses. Visit Ba’ata church (Menelik’s Mausoleum), one of the oldest churches in Addis Ababa. See its beautiful paintings and the royal tombs of past Emperors. Next visit Emperor Haile Selassie’s former palace which is the now home of the Ethnological Museum. Exhibits here represent the best of the arts and crafts of the country and give an in-depth insight into the various people of Ethiopia. Later on, visit the National Museum, known to be the best museum in Africa, where cultural and archaeological relics, including a plaster cast of “Lucy”, the 3.2 million-year-old Hominid, are displayed. Later in the afternoon, visit Merkato, eastern Africa’s largest market. In dusk, you get to visit the panoramic view of Addis Ababa from Entoto Mountain. Overnight at hotel.
Day 2; Awash National Park
After breakfast drive from Addis to Awash National Park through the awe-inspiring crater lakes of Debrezeit for birding. Further to Nazareth, visit the famous Sodere hot spring, which has got curative power. Overnight in Sodere.
Day 3; Awash National Park
After birding in Sodere area, continue driving to Awash Park, Birding in Awash National Park, located in the rift valley. It is enriched with many species of birds and mammals; African orange-bellied parrots, bustards, weavers, Somber rock-chat, yellow-throated serine, Red-fronted barbet, Pygmy baits, Lesser striped swallow, House martin and Anubis Baboon, Colobus Monkey, Black-backed Jackal, Bat-eared Fox, Egyptian Mongoose, Warthog, Beisa Oryx, Summering’s Gazelle, Lesser Kudu, Salt’s Dik-Dik and more. Overnight in Awash Park.
Day 4; Leave Awash for Langano
Birding in Awash in the morning and leave Awash for Langano via Mojo, en route, birding at Lake Ziway and Koka dam. Among some bird species you will see; African pygmy goose, Black-billed wood hoopoe, Abyssinian ground hornbill, Northern black tit, little weaver and more. Overnight in Langano.
Day 5; Abiyata-Shalla National Park
This day birding at Abiyata-Shalla National Park. Particularly, Lake Abiyata is the best place to bird many species, over 300, walking along the muddy and partly sandy lakeshore. For instance, yellow wagtails, Ibis, Cormorant, Pelicans, hammer cop, waders, ducks, egrets, herons, flamingos, storks, swallows, Chestnut-bellied sand grouse, Abyssinian ground-hornbill, rollers, wheatears, African Marsh Harrier and more. Overnight in Langano.
Day 6; Bale Mountains National Park
After breakfast, continue driving to Bale Mountains National Park and it is here you will visit many of the endemics like Blue-winged goose, Spot-breasted lapwing, Abyssinian long claw, Wattled ibis, Black-headed siskin, Rouget’s rail, Barred barbet and of course other species, too.
Day 7; Sof Omar Cave
After an early breakfast start driving to Sof Omar, about 120 km from Goba. Along the route you will have some stops for birding. For instance, White-ramped babbler, Nightingale, Dodson’s bulbul, Somali golden-breasted bunting, sunbird, warbler, Northern gray tit, Salvador’s serine, Brown-tailed chats, Pygmy Bats and more.
Day 8; Goba
Leave Goba early in the morning towards Sanete Plateau. While crossing a lush green forest, you will enjoy the Semien Wolves, endemic mammals. Then you will take another hike to the right hand side of the road to reach the highest peak, 4377meters above sea level. It is here where you will highly experience the chilly wind. Then you will walk slightly down and down across a moorland landscape dotted with white and yellow cushions of flowers, colorful lichen-covered rocks and sparse Giant Lobelias. You will visit many water birds in the small lakes.
Day 09; Hawassa
After an early breakfast drive to Hawassa. En route and in Hawassa, you will see lots of species, for instance, Silvery-cheeked hornbill, Abyssinian ground hornbill, Rouget’s Rail, lots of Marabou storks, Black & white egrets, African pygmy goose, Spur-winged goose, thousands of swallows, Ibis, Woodland kingfisher, and many more (over 200) species.
Day 10; Wendo Genet
After an early morning birding at Hawassa drive to Wendo Genet, via Shashemene. Wendo
Genet is a green and lush area, inhabited with lots of Grivet Monkeys, Colobus Monkeys and many species of birds. On the other hand, Wendo Genet is an excellent place for fresh tropical fruits and hot spring for which you find an Olympic size swimming pool.
Day 11; Addis Ababa
After relax morning drive to Addis Ababa via the rift valley lakes where you will have few stops for birding and in the evening, dinner party in Addis Ababa. Then transfer to Bole international airport and fly back home.
